Sweet Indulgence: Laurent Bernard Chocolatier, Singapore

Robertson Quay, a mecca for food lovers is located by the Singapore River. The lovely location offers the dual benefit of a tranquil ambience for an intimate dining experience or a hip and happening evening to chill out with friends. The eclectic mix of alfresco dining spots, bars and pubs, cafes, art houses and fancy condominiums, makes Robertson Quay an attractive option for a weekend hangout. It has become one of my latest haunts and in the past year as I've found myself there on numerous occasions either with my hubby or with my girlfriends. That being said, I've just managed to scratch the surface of this buzzing food hub. There are countless hidden gems that I have yet to discover for myself. I have a huge list of restaurants that I have yet to visit and I'm going to start crossing them off my list one by one.

I heard about Laurent Bernard from my husband. A friend of his could not stop raving to him about the Chocolate tart which he had there. Laurent Bernard is one of the more popular chocolatiers in Singapore. A little bit of background on this chocolate bar: This French patisserie opened at Robertson Quay in 2006. A year later, a cafe-restaurant opened at Portsdown, followed by a retail outlet at the Takashimaya food hall. Me and my hubby thought it would be worth checking it out so on one visit to Robertson Quay, we decided to hop over to Laurent Bernard after dinner to check out their desserts. Since then, I've been there several times. After any outing over at Robertson Quay, you will predictably see a gorgeous Tiffany Blue Laurent Bernard take-away bag sitting prettily on my dining table.

Okay so coming to the review of the place - The dessert bar is small but it is well-lit, intimate and charming. There is indoor seating as well as a cozy seating area outside which is perfect for a group of friends. Keep in mind that it gets pretty crowded on weekends so getting there early could brighten your chances of getting a seat.

See that glass shelf over the the corner? That is what houses all the goodies. They have a delectable collection of cakes and pastries. There are individual portions as well as larger cakes and the prices are indicated for each dessert (subject to taxes). Apart from these, you also have chocolate boxes, chocolate bars, chocolate cookies, macarons and other chocolate products. I think the chocolate boxes are a great gift idea. I for one would be pleased as punch to receive one of those. Anyone listening? 😛

Chocolate Tart ($8.50)
Among all the desserts I've tried, this is without a shadow of a doubt, my favourite one. It looks like a small portion but once you are finished with it, it is just right for one person. You have smooth, velvety, luscious chocolate that coats the inside of your mouth. Below the chocolate is a thin crunchy layer and the entire assembly sits on a hazelnut caramel biscuit. The contrast of the creamy and crunchy textures is what makes this dessert tick.

Truffle ($8.50)
Alternating layers of cake, dark chocolate mousse and raspberry filling. A large portion and a wonderful contrast of textures.

A big thumbs up 👍

Trianon ($8.50)
This one has a soft dark chocolate mousse layer that sits on a crunchy hazelnut biscuit base. Doesn't it look absolutely stunning? Another good dessert.

Apple Tart Tatin ($10.50)
I just love apple-based desserts. The apple tart tatin is an upside-down tart that is sweet and moist with a lovely flavour from the caramelization and a soft biscuit base beneath. I enjoyed it but I think I prefer the chocolate-based desserts from here a tad more.

I forgot the name of this dessert and it is not something I typically see each time I'm at Laurent Bernard so it is probably not one of the staples on their dessert menu. I recall it to be raspberry-based and like all the desserts here, it was good.

Blackforest ($8)
This pic doesn't do justice to this dessert and it is my fault entirely. I didn't handle the take-away bag carefully enough and the poor thing got pretty banged up on the ride back home. Believe me, this is a pretty little dessert which is really good. Probably my next favourite after the Chocolate Tart. It is soft and light with layers of cream cheese and a lovely hint of cherry flavour.

Pure ($10.50)
I don't have a pic for this one but that is probably because I sampled it when I had gone with eight of my girlfriends. In typical fashion, we went crazy sampling everything at one go which made photo-taking quite impossible. This dessert is perfect for dark chocolate enthusiasts and those who don't like their desserts too sweet. It has a combination of chocolate cake with dark chocolate ganache. It is aptly named because of its pure chocolate flavour. A bit too dark and ever so slightly bitter for my liking but I can appreciate the intensity of flavour. I will update this post with a picture of this on my next visit.

And this was what I had just yesterday. The delectable Chocolate Tart (of course) and the Apple Tart Tatin.

Ah! heavenly 👍

I have heard a lot of people recommending the Chocolate Soufflé at Laurent Bernard and that is something I desperately want to try. I always find myself here on a Friday evening and by the time I finish dinner and am ready for dessert, the place is really crowded so I always end up getting the desserts packed to take back home. Apparently, there is a waiting time for the Chocolate Soufflé so it is better grab a seat, sit back and patiently wait for it. Something I am definitely going to do next time so keep watching this space for an update 😊

So, the next time you are in need for a chocolate fix, you know where to head to.

  4. Absolutely the worst customer service ever. I placed an order for a cake, changed everything in the allocated time frame, only to have the cake delivered on the wrong date. The staff accuse customers of "pressuring" them, when they themselves are either lying to the management, or the management is lying to cover their own ass. They are ungracious, and will not admit it's their mistake. Apart from delivering the cake on the wrong date, they blame the customer, and insist on collecting the cake they have delivered wrongly, AFTER informing customer to keep the cake. They go back on their word, and are obviously too scared to give customers a proper response, they choose to delete a review. If they have nothing to hide, their actions is so honorable and justifiable, why is there a need to delete reviews? It's obvious that I'm not the first customer who feels this way, even if their desserts is the best in the world, based on the horrible service, I will never support them ever again. I will encourage everyone NOT to ever support such establishments. The worst service ever, I shall see how this company will survive with such attitude.
